Today there was another item in the news about NASA trying to "phone ET," a euphemism for sending messages into deep space. Looking for extraterrestrial life seems to be high on some people's wish lists. Humans, the grand explorers, and all that.
I take a dim view of it, because contact with us could be the worst thing to happen to any alien life form, and vice versa, even if contact weren't at this point still just so much science fantasy.
What is science reality is that we have not yet discovered all the life forms already on Earth. We have little information about many Earth life forms that have been discovered, and as a species, humans are anathema to many of the species we know much about. I wish Stephen Hawking would use his unique access to the world's ear to add that bit of information.
Why not make that grand adventure one of learning about and preserving life on THIS planet? Excitement, adventure, challenge, and opportunity are literally right under our noses.
