Changes to the climate throughout the world will lead to increased stress on the natural systems that have remained stable for so many years. These complex and often poorly understood systems may have thresholds perilously close to flipping, in which case any change we make : water extraction, deforestation, building, and - via climate change - changes in the weather, could have catastrophic effects.

This is not a subject to ignore. Rich or poor, north or south, low-lying or upland; we are all vulnerable to change.
